All-Access Reception
The energy and excitement for our 2014 All-Access Reception on Sunday, Feb. 16 was incredible. The Spirit Squad welcomed 300 guests into the Pavilion Club for a celebration of the program and a wonderful display of support from passionate fans. Young Bruin fans enjoyed the VIP Kids’ Zone-complete with a bounce house obstacle course inside of Pauley. Guests were invited to ring the Victory Bell on their way into the reception. Special UCLA celebrities included Coaches of the Year, Amanda Cromwell from Women’s Soccer and John Savage from Baseball. A highlight for the guests was not only having the National Championship winning coaches in attendance, but their National Championship trophies too! Brett Hundley, Myles Jack, Tyus Edney and Norman Powell were also a huge hit with all of our guests. Full Recap.

March Madness
We are taking our Bruin pride on the road! Our men’s and women’s basketball seasons have had its ups and downs, but we are packing up and excited to welcome March Madness 2014. The Spirit Squad got started with a trip to Seattle for the Women’s PAC-12 Championship and Vegas for the Men’s PAC-12 Championship. We will have 12 squad members and Joe or Josie Bruin on the road bringing the UCLA home court advantage and firing up Bruin fans! While squad members will be juggling their academics and taking finals on the road, they will truly embrace the opportunity to be a part of the madness! Join us for the PAC-12 Pregame Party. |

Battling Bruin, Caleigh
The Spirit Squad continued our outreach effort honoring people who are facing or have survived hardships such as injuries, illnesses, disabilities and military service. Participants have an opportunity to share their story with the UCLA Spirit family and receive spirit packs from the UCLA Spirit Squad. Each month, a selected Battling Bruin is featured on the Spirit Squad website and invited to the Battling Bruins barbecue. The goal is to celebrate the strength and spirit of these applicants, and inspire other Bruins who may be facing hard times. Read about our current Battling Bruin, Caleigh, and please nominate a Battling Bruin in your life.

Junior Spirit Wrap-Up
What an incredible year for our Jr. Spirit Squad! In our third season, we grew to 150 squad members ranging from ages 3-18. This program has truly been a win all around... a win for the participants who are now diehard UCLA fans, a win for the Bruin families who get to reconnect themselves and their children with campus, a win for the current Spirit Squad members who volunteer as part of the coaching staff and a definite win for the fans at each game who enjoyed their spirited performances. Our mini mascot program continues to be a HUGE HIT with squad members and fans! We look forward to bringing back the program for a fourth season next year. Applications will be available on our website in May – please stay posted! |

With a full four years on the Cheer Squad, I’ve had the experience of a lifetime performing at games ranging from the Men’s NCAA Tournament in Tampa, Fla. to appearing in the Pac-12 Football Championship two consecutive years in a row. One of my most memorable moments is when our football team beat USC at home in the pouring rain to clinch our first Pac-12 South Division title; with no Bruin leaving their seat and all of my teammates linking arms on the field, it’s hard to imagine a moment more exciting. In the upcoming years, I plan to work as a phlebotomist and earn some working experience before attending physician assistant school. Until then, I will be making the most of my final quarter at UCLA!

I have enjoyed every moment I’ve had on the UCLA Cheer Squad these past three years. It has been one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences. My favorite memory on the squad is the Nebraska game in Lincoln, Neb. this past season. The emotion and passion in the stadium that day was electrifying. Not only did our team come from behind to win the game, but they proved that they were more than just a football team. After I graduate, I am excited to move to San Francisco and start my job with Huron Consulting Group.

I’ve made a million unforgettable memories throughout my four years on the Spirit Squad, but my favorite has to be beating USC in 2012, 38-28, in the pouring rain. It was such an amazing experience to be down on the field in the Rose Bowl, soaking wet, jumping up and down in the giant puddle on the microphone box and cheering on my Bruins to a victory. There are definitely few experiences that compare, and I’m definitely going to miss game days, whether watching games down on the field or from courtside.
My plans after graduating include passing my boards and working as a registered nurse, hopefully with the pediatric population. I may or may not stay in Calif., pending job offers, but know that wherever I go I’ll always be a Bruin!

Once a Bruin, always a Bruin! Cheering at UCLA is one of my life’s highlights. I treasure those memories and the friendships I made. Among my favorite memories: marching in the Rose Parade and cheering at the Rose Bowl my senior year. I’m a New Year’s baby and that was the best way to spend a birthday! We got in line at 5 a.m. wearing only our uniforms in the winter chill and then marched and stunted for seven miles, but it was worth every goose bump and sore muscle!
Since then, I became a real estate attorney for commercial properties and developments, yet my heart never left the cheer world. I danced for the NFL as a San Diego Charger Girl, directed two professional cheer teams and even wrote a book on pro cheering, “Professional Cheerleading Audition Secrets: How to Become an Arena Cheerleader for NFL, NBA, and Other Pro Cheer Teams,” which went #1 Best Seller on Amazon.com for Auditions.
I’m taking a little time off right now from drafting leases and contracts because I just had a daughter Jan. 19, 2014, named Catalina Berys Clay. I’m enjoying my maternity leave and can’t wait to see everyone at Homecoming this fall!
