JULY 2014

Meet the New Team
Drumroll please...presenting your 2014-15 UCLA Spirit Squad. Check out the Cheer Squad, Dance Team and Yell Crew! They are working hard to prepare for the upcoming season. We look forward to showcasing the team at the UCLA vs. Memphis football game on Sept. 6 at the Rose Bowl.

The Centennial Campaign for UCLA
As UCLA approaches 100 years, we are enthusiastically reaching out to all of our strongest supporters and proud alumni. Please take a moment this summer to reconnect with our program and learn more about the breadth and depth we have expanded to in recent years. Our goals this upcoming year include the continuation of educating our fans and donors about how the Spirit Squad operates and the need for support for the student-athletes who volunteer endless hours of their time and talent to the university. Support can be monetary, but is also incredibly valuable in networking, mentoring and beyond.

The Spirit Squad Wants to Hear From You
We want you to reconnect with the UCLA Spirit Squad! On June 7, there was a perfectly classic and romantic UCLA wedding that took place in Tahoe. The beautiful couple promises to be blissfully happy, and one of the most exciting UCLA moments was watching the 2007-09 UCLA Dance Team reunite. This group of nine talented ladies spent two years together representing UCLA in China, at the Final Four and more! Reminiscing about their incredible adventure on the Dance Team and reconnecting with their pride as alumnae of the UCLA Spirit Squad reinvigorates the energy behind our alumni engagement initiative. Congratulations and best wishes to Katie (Wee) and James Keefe!

Battling Bruin, Gabriella
The Spirit Squad continued our outreach effort honoring people who are facing or have survived hardships such as injuries, illnesses, disabilities and military service. Participants have an opportunity to share their story with the UCLA Spirit family and receive spirit packs from the UCLA Spirit Squad. Each month, a selected Battling Bruin is featured on the Spirit Squad website and invited to the Battling Bruins barbecue. The goal is to celebrate the strength and spirit of these applicants, and inspire other Bruins who may be facing hard times. Read about our current Battling Bruin, Gabriella, and please nominate a Battling Bruin in your life.

Student Leadership Team
The Spirit Squad is focused on student development for our current student-athletes. The students work hard behind the scenes to make the magic happen and make their personal impact on the program’s success. The Student Leadership Team (SLT) volunteers time and energy above and beyond practices, workouts, games and appearances to bring the Spirit Squad to the next level. SLT alumni have leveraged this experience for their resumes and in job interviews to benefit them in their future career paths. Please welcome the 2014-15 members: Josslyn (Executive Liaison), Kelly (Community Outreach), McKenna (Development), Jane and Julia (Special Events), Areli (Sponsorships) and Danielle (Special Logistics).

Scholarship Drive
James Washington, our director of development, has brought incredible success to the Spirit Squad’s fundraising efforts; two full endowments and contributions to the Mollie Q. Vehling Spirit Squad Scholarship in recognition of our current Director and her 15 years with the program. James would like to complete the Mollie Q. Vehling Spirit Squad Scholarship as a full endowment. The highest compliment would be to incorporate your passion and spirit for UCLA into our program’s success. In continuing our efforts, when 1,000 donors give $1,000, we will have reached our goal of $1 million dollars to support the program. To learn more about this campaign, click here.

Senior Spotlight

LeeAnn
My favorite memory on Spirit Squad so far is traveling to the University of Arizona last year during football season. That game was such a rush – it was fun being on a different field and cheering on our Bruins. After graduation, I plan to work in the production side of film and television. I love the idea of being on a team that creates something of value and tells stories together.

Alumni Spotlight

Jedrix and Lisa Aquino
Before they were Jedrix and Lisa Aquino, these two Bruins met each other while preparing for the 1998-99 Spirit Squad auditions. Lisa was a returning two-year veteran of the cheerleading program and Jedrix was not even 60-days-old in the sport. The two would become stunting partners that year, which was the first step in Jedrix and Lisa’s journey together. After Lisa graduated, they began dating, got married in 2002 and now have two young girls who share the same energy and passion for life as their parents.
