Battling Bruin, Shannon Meyers
The Spirit Squad continued our outreach effort honoring people who are facing or have survived hardships such as injuries, illnesses, disabilities and military service. Participants have an opportunity to share their story with the UCLA Spirit family and receive spirit packs from the UCLA Spirit Squad. Each month, a selected Battling Bruin is featured on the Spirit Squad website and invited to the Battling Bruins barbecue. The goal is to celebrate the strength and spirit of these applicants, and inspire other Bruins who may be facing hard times. Read about our November Battling Bruin, Shannon, and please nominate a Battling Bruin in your life. |

Homecoming 2013
Close to 100 Spirit Squad alumni celebrated Homecoming at the UCLA vs. Colorado football game on Nov. 2. Miss USA 1983, Julie Hayek, joined her 1980-81 Song Team on the field and Dance Team alumna, Jamie Nomura ’07, accepted a marriage proposal LIVE on the video board! Everyone enjoyed reminiscing and performing during the Bruins win at the Rose Bowl. UCLA Football is working hard to complete another successful season -- support your Bruins through November and stay posted for Bowl Game info. |

The Spirit Squad is anxious to support the team and welcome Coach Alford and his staff to Westwood. Join us in Pauley for all the excitement! We will be supporting the team on the road in Las Vegas at the Vegas Invitational Nov. 28-29 and in New York for the UCLA vs. Duke game at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 19. |

A Thousand for 1000
The Spirit Squad is thrilled to announce the generous donation of not just one, but two $100,000 endowments! John and Mary Manuck led the charge at our All-Access Reception on June 1, committing to the first endowment. Bob and Dorothy Webb have also jumped on board to support a second endowment. This funding will go towards scholarship support for the entire program. The 2013-14 team received money in September to help cover their books for fall quarter.
Along with our dedicated development officer, James Washington, the Spirit Squad will be committed this season to find 1,000 supporters who will give $1,000. Our goal is to fund 40 endowments of $100,000 each to provide the entire program with a full-ride scholarship. You can help make this happen; your support and willingness to share in this goal is sincerely appreciated. |

Junior Spirit Squad
In our third season, the UCLA Junior Spirit Squad is full with 150 participants from ages 3-17. The program has already made a splash at the CAL football game and 2 women’s volleyball games. The group will be at the ASU football game (Nov. 23), two men’s basketball (Dec. 14 and Feb. 15), two women’s basketball (Jan. 5 and 31) and a gymnastics meet (Jan. 11). It has been such a treat to work with these young Bruins and we look forward to an exciting season with them! Check out photos from their first performance. |

Stuart
Favorite Spirit Squad memory: Running around Seattle to stay warm at 1 o’clock in the morning to come across what then turned out to be one of the best hot dogs of my life. All of the laughter and jokes that take place both on and off the field with my teammates. They crack me up just thinking about them. These memories will always hold a special place in my heart. After graduation, I am looking forward to starting a family and my own business while implementing the practical skills I’ve learned from the Spirit Squad. |
