Football 2012
Bruin Football is back and the Spirit Squad has worked tirelessly to support Coach Mora’s first season from the sidelines of the Rose Bowl and beyond. Our thrilling season began with our first game vs. Nebraska, then reached the pinnacle of excitement on Nov. 17 when UCLA dominated USC and brought home the Victory Bell. UCLA played in its second consecutive PAC-12 Championship Game against Stanford and despite the valiant effort, just fell short of playing in the Rose Bowl. The Bruins will instead play Baylor in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27 in San Diego. The buzz in Bruin Nation is at an all-time high. Secure your 2013 season tickets today!
Welcome Back Spirit Alumni!
Homecoming 2012 was a BLAST! More than 100 Spirit Squad alumni celebrated a huge UCLA win over Arizona. Our annual reunion was highlighted by Homecoming “regulars” and “rookies,” newborns and of course, overwhelming passion for the Bruins! It is always a treat to reconnect with our valued alumni. The fans love to watch everyone in their classic uniforms, strutting their stuff! We look forward to welcoming more friends back to the field next season. Alumni — stay tuned for details!
PAULEY! PAULEY! PAULEY!
Experiencing the many facets of Pauley Pavilion’s Grand Reopening was an honor and privilege that the Spirit Squad will never forget. Endless hours of rehearsal leading up to multiple unique productions completely consumed the program for more than four weeks. New Pauley is striking and has exceeded expectations in so many ways. Multiple campus departments coordinated grand scale opening events for specific audiences: donors, students, alumni, season ticket holders, the public, etc. At each event, the Spirit Squad was featured performing a dynamic routine. New costumes were unveiled at the Student Spotlight on Nov. 2. The feedback has been very positive. Check out more photos.
Time for Hoops!
UCLA Basketball tipped off this fall with high hopes and we are confident that both the men’s and women’s teams will have strong seasons. Their home openers in New Pauley were off the hook! Joe and Josie ziplined from the rafters and kicked off exciting pre-game shows, complete with the UCLA Drumline, UCLA Basketball greats, pyrotechnics and of course, a fabulous unity routine from the Spirit Squad. We are anxious for our talented teams to work hard and rack up victories all the way to March Madness!
The Big Apple!
Each year the Spirit Squad supports UCLA Men’s Basketball on the road for their Thanksgiving tournament. This year, six members of the Dance Team, a member from Yell Crew and Joe Bruin represented in the brand new Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn. In addition to the two basketball games, Joe Bruin was invited to join Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ’69 on the NCAA’s March Madness float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This opportunity has been on the Spirit Squad’s bucket list and it was truly an experience of a lifetime! Joe was treated like a top celebrity. The parade’s producers and overall professionalism were beyond impressive.

Jr. Spirit
The 2012-13 Jr. Spirit Squad has enjoyed multiple performances this season. Their new uniforms have wowed Bruin fans at two football games and two women’s volleyball games. Their debut in New Pauley at the Women's Basketball game on Dec. 2 was spectacular. We will conclude their season at the Men's Basketball game on Feb. 9 and the Women's Basketball game on Feb. 24. Come and support our young Bruin talent!

STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM: COORDINATORS
Riana and Angel, Equipment
As equipment coordinators we’re in charge of organizing and distributing equipment to members of the UCLA Spirit Squad. If there are any special routines that need extra costume pieces, it is our job to get them. We’ve enjoyed working together to ensure that everyone receives all the correct sizes. Our goal this year is to keep Mollie’s office free from excessive boxes by distributing equipment in a timely manner.

Kirsten and Stuart, Junior Spirit Programs
As the Jr. Spirit Programs Coordinators, we oversee the Jr. Spirit and Bruin Sparkles teams. This includes managing the Jr. Spirit and Bruin Sparkles’ Coaching Staff made up of current Spirit Squad members, assisting with choreography and managing logistics (including tickets, gear, and merchandise) and communicating with parents. It is our goal to create a fun Bruin experience for all of the young participants.

Joseph, Mascot Programming
My role as mascot coordinator is to oversee that the UCLA mascots properly represent the living and breathing brand of UCLA. This includes developing their character, organizing a calendar well in advance of appearances and sporting events, as well as keeping suits in proper condition. With this being a new position, my goal is to establish the standards and guidelines for sucess so that whoever takes over knows what skills this position requires.

Erica, Social Media
As social media coordinator I manage all of the social media for the Spirit Squad. This includes our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube channel. Through Facebook and Twitter I keep our fans up-to-date with all the events we are involved in and make sure we show our gratitude to all of our supporters. For every home football game I make a Bus Video for the squad to watch on the way to the Rose Bowl. My goal is to get the fans involved and let them get to know us on a personal level. #GoBruins!

Michelle, Merchandising | Online Photo Store
As merchandise coordinator, I am in charge of the selling and distribution of spirit squad posters and all other related merchandise that are sold through our online website and through the UCLA Store on campus. Through our partnership with ASUCLA, I operate the autograph table during game days to sell posters directly to fans as well as via mail through our new order form system. Lastly, I upload all fan photos taken during every game or event onto our online photo store at spirit.ucla.edu. All photos taken on our official spirit squad cameras can then be searched, viewed and purchased by any fan for a keepsake.
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
Dana
I don’t think I can put into words how much I have enjoyed and appreciated my time on the UCLA Spirit Squad. I will never forget the first day I got to take home my uniform. I was a competitive gymnast my whole life and had no idea I would become a cheerleader. It was when I first held my uniform that it hit me and I was giddy with excitement. The Spirit Squad has given me the opportunity to represent UCLA, a world renowned university, and truly immerse myself in the Bruin family. My most memorable moment from my two years on the squad is undeniably this year’s win against USC. The energy in the Rose Bowl was unbelievable and our team played like champions. I have never been more proud to be a Bruin and was so lucky to be on the field cheering on the excitement. After graduation I plan to enter the automotive industry as an associate level mechanical engineer. I will be working in powertrain development and hope to find my way into motorsports and the world of racing.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Kathleen Baty, The Safety Chick
My favorite Spirit Squad Memory was in 1985 at the Fiesta Bowl. We were playing the University of Miami. John Lee kicked the winning field goal with seconds left. A huge photo of Stacy Lindholm and I screaming with joy appeared on the front page of the Arizona Republic newspaper the next day. I am now an author and personal safety/crime prevention specialist. In 2003 I started SafetyChick Enterprises which sells personal safety products like “Party Girl Watch Your Cocktail” Date Rape Coasters. My new book, College Safety 101: Miss Independents Guide to Living Safe and Smart can be found in the UCLA Bookstore!! Check out more at www.safetychick.com.
