In Her Own Words
My interest in working with the medically underserved population began with my involvement with the Flying Samaritans at UC Irvine. Over the course of my medical education at UCLA, I was involved in externships that sent me to various rural areas, including Yelapa, Mexico. I then took a year off from medical school to explore different parts of the world and work on a project with Dr. Patrick Dowling on Health Professional Shortage Areas in Los Angeles. These experiences showed me that even though there is a huge medical need in other countries, sometimes the medical need is greatest in our own backyard. Read More »

Postcard from Mozambique
When I first traveled to Mozambique in 2010, there were only 10 local pediatricians and one general surgeon dedicated to the care of the country’s 10-million children. Inspired by the work that Lee was doing in pediatrics, I decided to devote a portion of my career making a sustainable impact on pediatric surgical care in Mozambique by helping to build local capacity. DIRECTOR’S CORNER

The UCLA Medical Alumni Association has completed yet another academic year on a high note. At the MAA Board of Directors spring board meeting, Mark Morocco, M.D. was presented with a plaque of appreciation for his two years of service as president and the 2014-15 slate of officers was unanimously approved. Neil H. Parker, M.D. (RES ’75, FEL ’78) has been named the Medical Alumni Association Alumnus of the Year for 2014 and four students from the Class of 2014 were presented awards at their senior send-off. CLASS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Class of 2014
On May 30, the MAA welcomed 219 new alumni at the Class of 2014 Senior Send-off. During the event, Kristina Lee and Evan Vellio, Class of 2014 MAA student representatives, presented a $2,035 check going towards the Class of 2014 Scholarship to senior leadership of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. With additional contributions from senior leadership and many MAA Board members, the Class of 2014 has now amassed $10,630. Read More »
