Global Brigades
Global Brigades, a student-led international development organization, takes action through a variety of disciplines, including medicine. Global Medical Brigades (GMB) at UCLA, part of Global Brigades, offers missions throughout the year. UCLA-trained physicians have volunteered to provide comprehensive health services in rural communities with limited access to health care in Ghana, Honduras and Panama. Postcard from Vietnam
In 2002, I traveled to De Nang, Vietnam with Surgical Eye Expeditions (SEE) International. I was joined by my father, Harvey Silverberg, M.D., also an ophthalmologist. It was an amazing experience on many levels. First, to be able to travel to another country and perform eye surgeries alongside my father was a genuine treat. In addition to alumni board members, the UCLA Medical Alumni Association (MAA) Board of Directors consists of two elected students representing each of the classes of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Henry Chan, M.D. ’89
I reluctantly gave up my beloved chronic pain management part of my anesthesiology practice in 2002 after being hit with a third malpractice suit from my pain patients. Since it is impossible for me as a physician to prevail over the lawyers on legal issues, a better strategy then is to join them. I graduated as the class valedictorian from Humphreys Law School in Stockton and was admitted to the California Bar in 2006. State bar membership allows me legally and ethically to attend their conferences to learn about legal strategy and tactics from within. Needless to say, I am now more confident and happier with my clinical anesthesia practice even after 20 years with the Permanente Medical Group in Northern California.

Seleda Williams, M.D. ’89, M.P.H.
As part of the Drew Class, I have continued my work with the underserved. My main job is as a Public Health Medical Officer with the State of California with the Department of Health Care Services. I am a public health and preventive medicine specialist and my role as a health officer has included government policy on maternal and child health, clinical preventive services, Medi-Cal and children with special health care needs. My love lies in chronic disease and obesity prevention. I am also an Associate Professor with UC Davis. I teach students, fellows and faculty about obesity and I run a nutrition and weight management clinic. I love talking about promoting health rather than treating disease.

Luis Humberto Macias, M.D. ’04
I completed a residency in general surgery at Maricopa County Hospital in Phoenix, followed by plastic surgery at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. I then completed fellowships in Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and an Aesthetic Fellowship here in Los Angeles. I’m now in private practice at Marina Plastic Surgery in Marina Del Rey and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine at USC. I specialize in breast and complex reconstruction and cosmetic surgery. Of particular note, I’m a UCLA football season ticket holder...Go Bruins!
