Postcard from the Turkey-Syria Border
Andrew Li, M.D., is currently a general surgery resident at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. His wife, Salma Shabaik, M.D., is a family medicine attending physician who spent part of her training at the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine. After hearing about the horrors of violence in Syria, the two decided to get involved in the struggle by volunteering their time and skills to those injured in the conflict. Andrew and Salma visited the Turkey-Syria border in late 2012 and treated war refugees seeking medical care. What follows is a postcard message detailing their four-day experience.

MAA Reunion Cruise 2013
Traditions are important. They allow us to have things to look forward to and provide us an opportunity to celebrate milestones. It is also important to ensure the events we put on for medical alumni are valued and supported. After consecutive and continuous years of decreasing attendance at MAA reunions, the decision has been made to do something different to get alumni together.

Graduates from the classes of 1955-63 and 1988, along with their partners and friends are invited on a Greek Isles Odyssey cruise from Oct. 17-25. Alumni will meet in Athens and visit Ephesus, Turkey; Rhodes, Greece; Aghios Nikolaos (Crete), Greece; Santorini, Greece; and Mykonos, Greece. Travel brochures will be mailed to the targeted classes in January. The cruise is expected to sell-out quickly. Reflections of an RN, M.D
My journey toward becoming a physician began in nursing school. Having earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing (1979) before completing my medical training has given me a keen appreciation for both roles and the importance of synergy between them. Early in my training, I embraced the principles of incorporating social justice and community service into the practice of healthcare, which strongly influenced my work in the area of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention.

Martin Donohoe M.D. ’90 is an adjunct associate professor for the School of Community Health at Portland State University. Jossey Bass-Wiley just published his book, “The Public Health and Social Justice Reader.” The book is designed to be used in conjunction with the public health and social justice website and is intended to inform (and even outrage) readers and motivate them to act.

William (Bill) Hastrup M.D.’77 is thrilled to be a first time grandparent with the birth of his granddaughter, Katherine, 8lbs 10oz, in Santa Monica in August. Her mother, his daughter, will be starting her third year in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA this June.

Susan Reynolds M.D.’76, Ph.D. ’74 writes that her new book, “Prescription for Lasting Success: Leadership Strategies to Diagnose Problems and Transform Your Organization,” has recently been published and released by John Wiley & Sons. She is the president and CEO of The Institute for Medical Leadership. It’s signature program, the Chief of Staff Boot Camp, is conducted two or three times a year at various resort locations around the United States.
