Kidney Anniversary

On our wedding day, Feb. 4, 1989, I gave my wife, Francie, my heart. 24 years and one day later, I gave her my left kidney. For Francie and me, our 24th wedding anniversary will always be the most special because it will be known as the “kidney anniversary.” It was a love story right at the start. I met and got to know Francie in the early ’80s. I was attending the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and was active with UCLA’s Catholic Center, playing guitar with the music group for several masses every weekend. Read more »

MAA Honors and Awards
Annually, the UCLA Medical Alumni Association (MAA) honors three graduating seniors with a $500 award. The Aesculapian Award is given to a graduating medical student who has demonstrated outstanding class leadership. The William G. Figueroa, M.D. Award is presented to a graduating medical student, who has demonstrated dedicated service to the medically underserved and strong academic achievement. The Edward A. Langdon, M.D. Award honors a graduating medical student who demonstrates compassion and humanitarian qualities. Read more »

Class of 2013 Senior Sendoff and Class Gift
Congratulations to the 174 members of the Class of 2013. The MAA welcomed the newest members during the annual Senior Sendoff on May 31. Student Representatives Ginger Slack, M.D. ’13 and Thomas Lew, M.D. ’13 presented a check in the amount of $2,036.26 to class president Sybil Zachariah, M.D. ’13, Dean Washington and Senior Associate Dean Parker. Graduating seniors made donations to support scholarships for medical students. Click here for a complete list of donors.

Conference in Career Choices in Medicine 2013
Current medical students are invited to attend the Specialties Fair as part of the Conference on Career Choices in Medicine on Sept. 7. Local medical alumni are encouraged to meet with students during lunch to discuss their specialties.

CLASS NOTES

Carlos Ayala, M.D. ’99 - retired from the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy in a ceremony at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada on May 31. Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Ayala, M.D.’99, served a total of 29 years, 20 of which were active duty.

Donald A. Adams ’50, M.A. ’51, M.D. ’55 - passed away on May 27, four days before his 87th birthday, due to complications from prolonged illnesses. Don entered the first class of the new UCLA School of Medicine and had the unique distinction of being the first graduate from the medical school in 1955.
