Clinical Volunteer Opportunities

Residency Graduate Assumes MAA Top Leadership Role

On July 1, Mark Morocco, M.D., the first UCLA residency program graduate to be elected to the organization’s top leadership position, will begin his term as the MAA President. When asked about the role the MAA plays in the medical enterprise, Dr. Morocco stated, “The MAA is a hub between UCLA Medicine’s past and future, and not just for the medical school graduates, but also for residency and fellowship graduates, past and present faculty, and our families. Working with the MAA lets me be a part of where we have been and where we are going. Plus it’s fun.”

Medical Supplies Donation

Last spring, the MAA collaborated with the Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County, Los Angeles Christian Health Centers and University Muslim Medical Association Community Clinic to distribute $65,000 of current inventory medical supplies to Los Angeles County and San Luis Obispo community clinics and the Loloma Foundation. The latter distributes medicine, clothing, school supplies and other necessities to many agencies throughout the Republic of Fiji. The in-kind donation was made by Henry Schein, Inc., a provider of healthcare products and services to medical, dental and veterinary office-based practitioners.

Class Scholarships Update

In recognition of the school’s first 60 years, Dean Eugene Washington and MAA President Wade Aubry, M.D. ’77, challenged alumni to support medical student scholarships and allocated matching funds for gifts of $1,000 or more. Alumni responded with 236 donations totaling $206,890, a 103% increase over 2010, with donations of $1,000-plus up 500%. Including the Dean's match, $397,953 was raised in just six months. Two new MAA Class Scholarships were established, for 1962 and 1981, which join the Classes of 1955, 1961, 1975, 1976, and 1979 that have surpassed the $100,000 endowment threshold.

Class of 2012 Scholarship

The Class of 2012 started its philanthropic giving and raised $1,436. The MAA would like to thank all who contributed and acknowledge those who donated at the gold, silver and bronze levels.
