The 2011-2012 team has been selected and practices for football are well under way! The Dance Team has 11 members (six returning), Cheer Squad has 18 members (six returning) and the Yell Crew has 9 members (three returning). The talent, beauty and overall quality of the candidates impressed the judges which included cheer and dance professionals, alumni and campus representatives. Elita Loresca, the NBC morning news weather anchor was a judge on all three panels for a total of 13 hours. She remarked, “It was a fantastic experience and I can’t wait to see all the talented faces chosen for the upcoming season.”
All-Access Reception
Guests were treated to an enjoyable afternoon on April 10 at the James West Alumni Center with tasty food, flattering remarks from coaches Rick Neuheisel ’85 and Ben Howland, and a successful silent auction and opportunity drawing. The most coveted item, a pair of original Pauley Pavilion seats, went home with the Amorelli Family. Auction winners will also enjoy the chance to sport the mascot costume this upcoming season. The Spirit Squad will always be the first thing I remember about my college career at UCLA. I will never forget the experience of standing in the middle of the Rose Bowl or Pauley Pavilion and just taking in the overwhelming sound of screaming fans. What a privilege to be a part of the most amazing tradition of athletics in the nation! My favorite memory is when we absolutely killed Texas this past fall. The entire football team rushed to the small section of fans where we had been cheering the whole game and everyone jumped up and down, screaming, crying and celebrating a well deserved victory.

My plans for next year, other than to finish my last year at UCLA strong, are to continue dancing in the LA area by taking class, auditioning and choreographing. I will also be getting more involved in the nutrition and fitness industry as I am very passionate about helping people reach their healthiest and happiest potential. This summer, I am traveling to Italy for an internship at World Dance Movement, an international dance convention, where I will be assisting all of the professional choreographers and building on my love for Italian language and culture. Even though I will not be returning next season I will always remember and cherish everything the Spirit Squad has given me! I am a very lucky girl. Go Bruins!

My favorite Spirit Squad memory would definitely have to be the Texas-UCLA football game on the road this past season. To be in such a historical stadium, playing a football powerhouse team, with all their fans bleeding orange, was an incredible experience. UCLA played well that game, winning 34-12. It was the greatest upset that I have personally witnessed. The energy was unreal.

For my senior year, I plan to take a rigorous full load of engineering courses to work towards completing my bioengineering degree. In addition, I hope to continue my internship in the fall with the UCLA Graduate Research Medical Imaging Informatics program. Although the UCLA Cheer Squad has been a big part of my college experience since my freshman year, I am excited to tailgate and watch the games from a whole new perspective. I can’t wait to see the new team perform this year!

I was on the Dance Team from 2006-2010, and was captain in ’07-’08 and ’09-’10. Though I miss UCLA dearly, I am onto some pretty fun and exciting things. I am working as an actress in Los Angeles, and am also a contestant in the Miss California USA pageant this year. The pageant will be this November and I will be representing Hollywood Heights. The cause that I am representing in the pageant is health in schools, and I am working with a few different organizations that bring exercise and nutrition education into schools to try to combat the ever-growing childhood obesity epidemic. Personally, I will begin teaching dance classes at title one schools in LAUSD this month, and am very excited to be working towards making a difference in the community. Between now and the pageant, I am also working to raise money in order to pay for my entrance fee, pageant coaching and gown, and of course I am also working towards getting in really great shape. If you are interested in learning more about me and what I am doing with the pageant, go to katiewee.bbnow.org.
