Dr. Levey’s Legacy In February 2010, Gerald S. Levey M.D., stepped down as Vice Chancellor, UCLA Medical Sciences and Dean, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. In 2009, one year after he announced his intention to step down, the MAA presented him with the Award of Extraordinary Merit for his leadership in academic medicine and private sector medical affairs. As an internist and endocrinologist, he has conducted widely known and applied research on the thyroid gland and heart. His proudest professional achievements include the planning and constructing of the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center - the world’s most advanced medical facility, obtaining the Geffen endowment, and overseeing the building of five new research facilities. The MAA caught up with Dr. Levey for a one-on-one. |

MAA on The Road Last year I had the great opportunity to hear first hand about the professional successes and volunteer interests of our alumni in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Nashville and San Luis Obispo. In 2012, the MAA will continue its outreach efforts by hosting a reception in Las Vegas on April 20, in San Luis Obispo on Oct. 14, and in San Francisco on Nov. 4. I hope to see you at one of the events. A special “thank you” to Nisha Abdul Cader M.D. ’95, and Rushdi Cader M.D. ’95, for hosting 16 alumni, representing graduating classes from 1956 through 1997, as well as Harbor-UCLA residency programs, at the MAA’s first California Central Coast alumni dinner. Alumni Remember Edward “Ned” Langdon M.D. On Dec. 5, 2011, medical alumni, faculty and staff celebrated the life of Edward “Ned” Langdon M.D., Dean of Students from 1963-85, in the Grand Horizon Room of the Susan G. Covel and Mitchel D. Covel M.D. Commons at UCLA’s Sunset Village. “Ned Langdon was honored in the most official and classy way. I was very moved by the singing, rifle salute, presentation of the flag and the eulogies. The whole event reinforced in me Ned’s gift of paying it forward with grace, gratitude and good humor.” Thomas Weisenburger M.D. ’69. |

Jamie D. Feusner M.D. ’99 - I am an Associate Professor in Residence in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, Director of the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Intensive Treatment Program and Director of the Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) Research Program. I began conducting research on BDD seven years ago at UCLA. It is a psychiatric disorder in which individuals are preoccupied with perceived defects in their appearance that are not noticeable or appear slight to others. Carter Newton M.D. ’73 - Greetings from Tucson, Arizona. I am still in cardiology, but I do not see patients any longer. Now my professional activities are on non-invasive coronary imaging, advocacy, business consulting and training of others. Paula J. Pearlman M.D. ’81 - I have been an emergency medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente in West Los Angeles for nearly 30 years. Compelled to give something back, about eight years ago I started volunteering to do tattoo removal at Homeboy Industries. The organization was founded by Father Gregory Boyle and is recognized as the largest gang intervention and re-entry into society program in the county. |
