THE BRUIN EDGE: Week 9

Spring Break is so close! Take some time for what we like to call “life administration” – those things you’ve been meaning to get to but, you know, midterms. One easy step: make sure you have a professional-looking padfolio to carry your resume and notes to interviews or job fairs.

Alumni Spotlights

Corey Matthews ’10, M.A. ’11 is a nonprofit management and public policy professional with a decade of experience leading, designing and evaluating community-based programs in urban education and criminal justice. As the VP of LeadersUp, Matthews leads the firm’s work in talent, impact and consulting. You can “meet” Matthews and ask questions during his virtual Bruin Career Insights interview on March 28. RSVP here

Professional Tip

Check off some career and grad school to-dos over Spring Break, including:

  • Set up a UCLA ONE account to start connecting with UCLA alumni in your intended career field.
  • Set up informational interviews with alumni, co-workers, mentors or family friends who have interesting careers (use UCLA ONE or LinkedIn to locate people).
  • Shadow a family member, friend or UCLA graduate at their job for a day.
  • Create or update your résumé. Then have the Career Center review it after break!
  • Start applying for summer internships, jobs or other opportunities.
  • Set up a LinkedIn profile (this tutorial is a great starting point).
  • Google yourself to see what prospective employers will find and make sure your social media accounts do not show up in Google searches.
  • Research interesting graduate school programs and create a prospective list. Not sure if grad school is right for you? Start here.
  • Map out a timeline for applying for jobs/fellowships/service programs/grad school.
  • Research post-undergrad fellowship and scholarship programs that could fund graduate school or provide a post-college job or research opportunity.
