THE BRUIN EDGE: Week Three

So many networking events coming up! STEM Networking Night tonight, Nonprofit Networking Night next week… it’s a lot. Here are 30 Brilliant Networking Conversation Starters – our favorite is number 26 (because who doesn't love sushi?).

Alumni Spotlight

Caitlin Beck, M.P.H. ’05 is the CAO of the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital and Women’s Health. Her past experiences include health care consulting through PwC and a senior executive role at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Professional Tip

If you’re feeling nervous at a networking event, warm up by chatting with other students. When you feel more comfortable, approach an alumnus or industry representative with one of the students you met. Say something like “Hi, my name is Alyssa and this is my friend Anna. I’m a biochem major and she’s studying statistics. What did you study at UCLA?” If you’re approaching a group, simply say “May I join you all?” then wait for a lull in the conversation to introduce yourself and ask a question about someone else.

Be conscientious about how much time you’re talking with any one person. When you’re ready to move on or you notice the person looking around the room for a new person to talk to, excuse yourself with something like “It’s been wonderful talking with you. Please excuse me.” Since you’ll likely have received a list of participants, be sure to follow up with them on LinkedIn or UCLA ONE after the event.
