Professional Tip
A professional mentor is someone committed to supporting your professional success who typically works in your intended career field. A strong mentor does not have to be someone in a high-ranking position; sometimes the best mentors are younger professionals who understand your current needs. A mentor relationship does not have to be formal or official, but can instead happen organically by meeting a professional at a career workshop and following up to ask for an informational coffee meeting, frequently attending office hours with the same professor, connecting with a colleague at an internship, or volunteering for a nonprofit you admire and asking the staff for career advice. Leverage these informal relationships by keeping in touch via email and LinkedIn, showing interest in their own career success, seeking their advice and updating them on your career progress. When you feel stuck or need career support, reach out to them with your questions or ask to meet in person. Asking for help is not a burden on their time and the worst that can happen is they say no. Most people remember how nerve-wracking it is to land a first job and are eager to give back to current students. Don’t know where to start? Browse UCLA ONE to find alumni professionals working in careers you’re interested in.
