MAA QUARTERLY, Summer 2015
FEATURE

Marshall Morgan, M.D. was famous as one of the founding fathers of Emergency Medicine, a new specialty in the 1970s—when UCLA and USC made Los Angeles the “cutting edge” as EM grew. He was a giant in our field, and no matter where you went, when someone found out you were from UCLA, they would say, “Is Marshall still there?” Or, “Do you know Dr. Morgan?” It was a little like knowing Elvis. Here is how we met, and it says a lot about who Marshall was. When I was a first year medical student, I came home to LA for spring break, looking for something medical to do during the last summer—the vacation between first and second year after which medical students work year round, forever. Read More »

UNDER THE SCOPE

Reflections by Shirah Vollmer, M.D. '86 (RES '90, FEL '91)
I have spent most of my adult life learning at UCLA. It started when I was a freshman and it has continued through 25 years of teaching UCLA Family Medicine residents about biobehavioral aspects of primary care. I have come to find out that my experience is both broad and deep, enabling me to share with my students a perspective that they value tremendously. Many of them are not familiar with developmental disabilities and the nuances of autism, for example, where they may mistake children with anxiety as having autism. Read More »

CLASS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Class of 2015
The cost of a four-year education for today’s UCLA medical students is nearly $300,000. To help alleviate student debt, the MAA launched a scholarship program, to which alumni and friends have collectively contributed nearly $2 millionSince 2002, each senior class has joined in, making a class gift at the time of graduation to increase scholarship support for future medical students. This year, the Class of 2015 raised $2,100. The MAA would like to thank everyone who contributed and recognize those who donated at the Gold, Silver and Bronze levels. Read More »

DIRECTOR’S CORNER

It is my pleasure to announce the UCLA Medical Alumni Association Executive Board of Directors for 2015-16 as well as recognize three recent graduates for their exemplary awards in leadership, service and humanitarianism. On June 5 the MAA welcomed 188 new alumni into the family. A special shout-out to Brittany Dixon, M.D. ’15 for her leadership in the Class of 2015 Operation Medical Libraries book drive, as well as to those who donated their medical textbooks. These resources will be shared with physician scholars in the UCLA Family Medicine International Medical Group Program and UCLA PRIME, and sent to medical schools in Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Read More »
