Practicing medicine in a Third World country comes with overwhelming challenges, such as diseases due to unsanitary conditions and a lack of public health education. Political strife and religious conflicts also impede significant development. HHHE has utilized a new paradigm in volunteer work, the basis of which is educating women and children. My story begins in China, where I was born. From the time I was 12 years old, I saw the world through the lens of an immigrant from a divorced family. Difficulties can provide insights and inspiration. My goal to become a physician grew out of my desire to help people during their most vulnerable moments. Where did the summer go? As I write, the academic year is in full swing. On Friday, Aug. 7, the 175 members of the Class of 2019 received their white coats at a formal ceremony in Royce Hall. The class consists of three programs: 133 students in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, 24 students in the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (Drew), and 24 students in the Program in Medical Education (PRIME). The youngest student is 21 years old and the oldest is 35. Read More »
