Motherhood and Medicine
With the current class of 2014 at 47% female, the question arises how do those who decide to juggle motherhood and medicine find success in both areas?

“I chose to practice part-time in my father’s medical office, plus occasionally filling in for my brother in his. I was close to home at these offices and enjoyed motherhood…”
- Lucia Carpenter-Dean M.D. ’62

“It always amazes me that we spend four years as undergraduates, four years as medical students, and four years as residents before we are trusted to see a patient alone. And yet we are given babies to take home with precisely no training!”
-Eva Ritvo ’83, M.D. ’87

“I love being a mom, and spending time with my daughter is of the utmost importance to me. I love medicine as well and am in the process of finding the right balance.”
-Ash Davison M.D. ’07

From MMA Board President Wade Aubry
With 44% of the MAA members residing outside of Los Angeles, it is critical that the organization actively reach out to alumni that are scattered throughout the United States. The outreach committee, with representatives from 12 different cities, is charged with developing opportunities for these members. The focus is to increase alumni attendance at regional functions, such as the “Alumni and Friends” reception hosted by Dean Washington at the AAMC annual meeting in Washington, D.C. this past November.

LinkedIn Links Alumni
Donald H. Marks, Ph.D. ’77, M.D. ’80, director at the hepatitis clinic at Cooper Green Mercy Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, created the LinkedIn group for the David Geffen School of Medicine alumni at UCLA in 2008 which now serves as the official UCLA Medical Alumni Association group. Dr. Marks, who trained in internal medicine and earned a Ph.D. in microbiology, believes that “LinkedIn is a great way to use social networking within a professional environment to maintain ties with professional contacts. I have used LinkedIn to reach out to other UCLA med grads, and hope that many more from my 1980 class and grads from other years will join to share news and information.” Join today!
