strength in community
Recently, our UCLA Alumni Association President Paco Retana ’87, M.S.W. ’90, connected with our alumni diversity network leaders and in reflecting on this current moment, he shared a quotation from Audre Lorde: “When I dare to be powerful to use my strength in service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important if I’m afraid.” I cannot think of a more apt call to action for all of us.

As a new member of the Bruin community and UCLA Alumni Affairs, I have spent the past two months immersed in UCLA and Bruin life. From the April book talk our team hosted featuring La’Tonya Rease Miles, M.A. ’99, Ph.D. ’04, to UCLA Awards in May, to Chancellor Frenk’s inauguration and various Class of 2025 celebrations in June, Bruins are accomplished, engaged and proud. Yet these moments of celebration have been starkly juxtaposed against, and sometimes dampened by, all that is happening in our country and the world right now. Chancellor Frenk acknowledged in his June 5 Inauguration address that he is leading “an extraordinary university at an extraordinary time,” and I have seen firsthand how much this is true.

While the nation and the world grow ever more divided, Bruins engage in Dialogue Across Difference. As the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion come under attack, Bruins continue to build community through programming and inclusive spaces that celebrate and uplift diversity. When our community members are targeted, the city of L.A. stands up in protest and encourages folks to identify everyday ways to support and protect their neighbors. UCLA’s Class of 2025 is entering a world of political, social and economic upheaval, and yet, so many of the new graduates I’ve spoken with express feelings of hope and determination. This is what it means to be a Bruin in 2025: we use our strength in service of our vision, and when we do it together, we are all the more powerful.
