In solidarity, the identity-based alumni organizations of the UCLA Alumni Association stand with the Asian American Pacific Islander communities that are continually impacted by acts of hate and violence. We seek support for our students and alumni during this time to address the aspects that perpetuate anti-Asian violence and all other forms of racial injustice. Please read the full letter, signed by the leadership of all nine identity-based alumni organizations of the UCLA Alumni Association.
LGBTQ+ Asian American Pacific Islander leaders have demonstrated generations of solidarity across lines of race and heritage — they include Bruin leaders like D'lo, Kristina Wong '00, Jenny Yang, Giovanni Ortega, M.F.A. '04, Mia Yamamoto, J.D. '71, George Takei '60, M.A. '64, Patricia Nguyen, David Sun, Rino Kodama '20 and Ceci Sheng.
The pain of our Asian American Pacific Islander siblings is deeply, intrinsically linked to our broader LGBTQ+ community conditions. It will take us all — standing in solidarity, decrying acts of violence and engaging in honest conversation — to abolish white supremacy and deeply care for one another.
Lambda was founded to address LGBTQ+ injustices by creating a platform of visibility and empowerment for diverse cultural voices. Three decades later, we continue to examine the impact of race in the LGBTQ+ community, both at UCLA and beyond, in order to fulfill our mission to sustain a network of LGBTQ+ alumni and friends to support one another, UCLA students and the greater LGBTQ+ community. We continually renew our commitment to the full diversity of our community as one of the oldest and most well-established LGBTQ+ alumni organizations in the country.
