Celebrate Black Bruins

The UCLA Black Alumni Association (UBAA) has been supporting the greater Black community for over 50 years. This Black History Month we want to highlight the great work UBAA has done to lead conversations about social and racial justice.

In January, UBAA held its Social Justice Virtual Summit and led a number of conversations addressing racial and social justice — from highlighting inequities in the pandemic response and education to addressing anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment in the Black community. Join us in recognizing the UCLA Black Alumni Association's work by watching one (or more) of UBAA's programs:

All Black LGBTQ+ Lives Matter

Anatomy of a Racist

Athletes Beyond the Wind — A Conversation With the 1968 Olympic Track Team

Black at the Intersection of Racial Justice and the Pandemic

Remembering the Life of Latasha Harlins — A Love Song for Latasha

Unmasking Disparities in Education in a COVID World

This week's offerings provide opportunities for Bruins to support the Black community at UCLA and beyond.

Be an Activist, Be The Match
We have partnered with Be The Match for a special edition of EmPower Hour. Learn from sociologist and transplant recipient Dr. Alexes Harris, M.A. '99, Ph.D. '02, about how we hold the power to disrupt one of the biggest health disparities in our country today.

Participate
UCLA will be highlighting Black alumni, students, faculty and staff for Black History Month. All Black Bruins are welcome to submit a short video to be a part of the celebration.

Read
The UCLA Million Dollar Hoods project, led by faculty director Dr. Kelly Lytle Hernández, M.A. '00, Ph.D. '02, received a $3.45 million grant for a new project, " Archiving the Age of Mass Incarceration ," that will use LAPD records to dissect the history of mass incarceration in Los Angeles.

Watch
UC President Michael V. Drake Reflects on Black History Month, highlighting Black workers, scholars, artists and activists who have propelled the University of California — and the world — forward, and the work that remains to be done to achieve our ideals of equality, inclusion and justice.

Support
Providing scholarships, advocacy, support and networking opportunities have been just a few of the ways UCLA Black Alumni Association has supported UCLA. You can help UBAA continue this work by supporting its  scholarship program.

As always, we thank you for all your love and support. Feel free to forward this to a friend and visit our social media companion to the Diversity Digest on Instagram at @ucladiversealum. Most importantly, please let us know if there is a topic you are interested in by submitting ideas to diversity@alumni.ucla.edu.

Stay safe and Go Bruins,
