We are so excited to celebrate Filipino American History Month (FAHM) with you this October! Founded in 1991, the Pilipino Alumni Association (PAA) will be celebrating its 30th anniversary in the coming year (hopefully in person in the spring quarter!) This month and for the coming year, we invite you to learn more about the contributions, accomplishments and history of our community, as well as join us in our upcoming events.
In solidarity,
JoAnna Poblete, Ph.D. '06
UCLA Pilipino Alumni Association Board Member and Co-Chair of the UCLA PAA Ethnic Studies committee
Learn Our Histories (Past and Present)
This year, the Filipino American National Historical Society’s theme for FAHM is: 50 Years Since the First Young Filipino People’s Far West Convention. The First Young Filipino People’s Far West Convention was a meeting that took place at Seattle University in 1971 and brought over 300 young Filipino American participants from the West Coast of the U.S. The convention is hailed as the beginning of the Filipino American Movement.
COVID-19 Impacts: A number of studies have revealed how hard the pandemic has hit Filipino health care workers. More than a quarter of nurses who have died of COVID-19 and related complications in the U.S. are Filipino American. This ethnic group makes up just 4% of nurses in the country.
Celebrate the Pilipino Studies Minor at UCLA
In fall 2020, the Pilipino Studies minor became available to UCLA students through the Asian American Studies Department! The campaign for Pilipino studies at UCLA has been in the works for decades and is rooted in the Third World Studies liberation movement that ushered in the emergence of ethnic studies, American Indian studies, Asian American studies, Latina/o studies and African American studies.
