An Introspective Celebration

Our pandemic quarantine has truly disrupted our “normal” way of doing things, including how we celebrate. From progress made in local governments as a result of the protests, to making pride more inclusive, to celebrating our newest alumni from the class of 2020 — it is important to acknowledge moments to celebrate.

This week’s offerings continue to amplify the voices of our marginalized communities. We are featuring how Bruins are celebrating in this important moment in our world, including our newest alumni from the class of 2020. We hope it offers you a chance to have an introspective celebration for the milestones we've collectively reached or whatever means most to you during these times of disruption. Here are this week’s offerings:

PROCESS
Nicole Presley Green ’97, executive director of UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services, and Tyrone Howard, professor of education and director of the UCLA Black Male Institute, come together to discuss how to process racial trauma.

REFLECT
Patrisse Cullors ’12 shares a collective prayer with us in this live-performance for Pride at the Fowler, “Prayer for the Runner.”

READ
The UCLA LGBTQ Campus Resource Center offers recommendations of autobiographies featuring queer Black authors in uplifting #blackpublishingpower.

LEARN
In honor of Loving Day, UCLA Mixed Alumni Association and Multiracial Americans of Southern California came together for a discussion on the current climate and the impact of striking down anti-miscegenation laws in the United States.

INSPIRE
George Takei ’60, M.A. ’64, inspires our UCLA Centennial Class of 2020 in his commencement speech to “boldly go where no man has gone before” and to embrace our “infinite diversity in infinite combinations.” Although not available in Vulcan, the commencement ceremony is offered in multiple languages.

CONGRATULATE
Celebrate the class of 2020 in the recorded Pilipinx Graduation and Raza Graduation that occurred over the weekend on Facebook. Visit our companion @ucladiversealum on Instagram to view congratulatory messages to the Centennial Class of 2020 from our alumni.

ACT
Have a suggestion on what alumni can do? Share with us here. Did you attend a protest or the #AllBlackLivesMatter solidarity march? Tag @ucladiversealum on Instagram or share your experience with us via email.

As always, we love hearing from our community members. Feel free to share this with other Bruins you may know, and feel free to share the ways you have introspectively celebrated with us.

Cheers,

The staff of UCLA Alumni Diversity Programs & Initiatives
