Help us achieve history! By meeting our spark campaign fundraising goal, we are on track to raise $250,000 for the 2023-2024 academic year.
The UCLA Latino Alumni Association (ULAA) is pleased to announce our 2024 Spark Campaign, which raises money for ULAA’s scholarship fund. We invite you to join us in helping Bruins have the resources they need to become tomorrow’s stellar alumni. Donations make a direct and tangible impact in the lives of our high-achieving and deserving scholarship recipients.
Your support, whether big or small, makes all the difference in the lives of Bruins today and tomorrow. We thank you for joining us in our efforts to bring the gift of education to our deserving scholars. Look out for future email communications as we prepare to launch the campaign.
Student Success in Our OrgullOSO Mentor Program
We partnered with UCLA ONE this year to pair alumni with students through the OrgullOSO Mentor Program, which fosters meaningful relationships between UCLA alumni and undergraduate or graduate students who identify as Latino, Latina or Latinx. This year, we had approximately 286 pairs, an increase of 41 percent from last year. As a result of our fundraising efforts this year, all participating students were invited to apply for a $500 award. We are happy to report that all 54 students who applied were eligible and received the award during the spring quarter of this academic year. Our ability to support students with mentors and scholarships is made possible because of you. We hope you will consider being a part of this impactful program when we launch again next fall. As a mentor, you can support, advise and guide students who seek mentorship from alumni like you. Our goal is to match mentors and students based on interests and experience levels.
Event Recaps
Limitless: From Pivot to Power Panel (Part 2)
On April 17, ULAA hosted the second installment of our “Limitless” career panel series featuring extraordinary Latina Bruin alumnae. The panel’s theme was “From Pivot to Power” and featured Valarie De La Garza '91, CEO of Fenton Communications, Begoña Guereca, M.P.P. '15, software engineer at GitHub, and Candy Rivas '12, Ph.D., R&D scientist supervisor at Agilent, who, with the guidance of our moderator, ULAA vice president and assistant dean at UC Berkeley Jennifer Mora '96, shared personal journeys and strategies for succeeding in today’s fast-changing environment. The conversation touched on challenges ranging from underrepresentation to imposter syndrome and was filled with motivational advice that filled the virtual space with confidence and empathy. In case you missed it, you can view the recording on our YouTube channel!
Griffith Park Hike — Captain's Roost
On April 20, the UCLA Latino Alumni Association and Stanford Latino Alumni Association embarked on a four-mile hike at Griffith Park on the Captain's Roost trail. As they ascended, the trail led them higher into nature and also brought them closer together, fostering bonds of camaraderie and mutual support. Upon reaching the summit, a shared feeling of achievement and unity resonated among the group, deepening their connections.
On the way back, they paused for a mindfulness session at Berlin Forest, immersing themselves in the serenity of the trees and allowing themselves to be fully present in the moment before concluding their hike. After the hike, participants finished out the morning with brunch at a local restaurant.
