Working to Become a Hispanic-Serving Institution
UCLA has tapped alumna Elizabeth Gonzalez, a longtime expert on equity and student success in higher education, as its inaugural Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) director in the Office of the Chancellor as UCLA ramps up its efforts to apply for and receive recognition as an HSI from the U.S. Department of Education. Her appointment comes just as UCLA’s HSI Task Force has published its final report setting out seven key recommendations for achieving federal HSI designation.
“I’m an action-oriented person, and what excites me is that there’s a lot of creativity and innovation at the time we design and begin to implement these initiatives,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and education studies from UCLA and holds a master’s and doctorate in psychology from UC Santa Cruz.
UCLA Latino Alumni Association’s New Bruin Send-offs
The UCLA Latino Alumni Association is honored to host the New Bruin Send-off Celebration to welcome local incoming students and families into the Bruin family. Join us this summer for a casual celebratory gathering that brings together students, parents and alumni. This is a great opportunity for students and their families to immerse themselves in the UCLA community, network with peers and ask questions, and share the excitement of joining the Bruin family.
This annual tradition requires your support to make it a success! We’re recruiting alumni volunteers to support with: setting and cleaning up; greeting and hosting; decorating; and, most importantly, sharing your experience with incoming students.
Next steps if you're available to volunteer:
Fill out the volunteer form to get updates and let us know what area you can support us with.
If you would like to join the planning committee, led by Seira Santizo Greenwood, email latino@alumni.ucla.edu. First virtual meeting: Wednesday, July 27, at 5:30 p.m.
Whether or not you can volunteer to help stage the event, if you are able to attend, fill out the RSVP form by clicking the button below.

Join a ULAA Committee Meeting
If you’re interested in volunteering on a committee, please email us at latino@alumni.ucla.edu with the subject line addressed to the committee you are interested in. Committees meet virtually once a month and plan the events that we host.
Scholarship — The scholarship committee is a great way to assist ULAA in organizing events and programs that directly benefit ULAA scholarship recipients and students who are looking for general mentorship. You’ll be a strong asset to the committee if you have a passion for making an impact in students' lives, are adept at gathering large groups of people and have the ability to oversee all phases of a project.
Membership — Joining this committee is a great way to help ULAA keep alumni engaged and introduce alumni to ULAA. It is perfect for alumni who enjoy planning events, meeting other Bruins and introducing our organization to new members.
Community Relations — Responsible for public and media relations, as well as promotional activities involving ULAA, this committee manages our social media and prepares our monthly newsletter. Community Relations seeks volunteers who have experience creating graphics, copy and engaging content, as well as social media strategists.
Finance — Joining the finance committee is a great way to support our fundraising efforts. You’ll be a strong asset to the committee if you have a passion for giving back and experience with fundraising and email campaigns. The committee currently has members who work in finance, development and nonprofits. All members share a strong interest in growing the ULAA scholarship funds.
If you’re interested in learning more or joining the finance committee, please email jennifervmora@gmail.com.
University Relations — This Committee supports our network and students by providing opportunities and insights about careers and professional development and becoming a source of information and advocacy relating to UCLA’s policies and practices. If you are interested in these areas, please consider joining this committee! Tangible activities will include planning and hosting career panels and workshops, arranging for guest speakers, and developing updates about a range of UCLA initiatives that matter to our community.
If you’re interested in learning more or joining the committee, please email Andres Snaider at asnaider@nextant.com.
