On Jan. 1, 2025, Dr. Julio Frenk will become UCLA's seventh chancellor, succeeding Gene Block, who has served for 17 years. Currently the president of the University of Miami, Frenk is a distinguished global public health researcher, having previously worked as Mexico's secretary of health and for the World Health Organization. “I consider myself a boundary spanner and a bridge builder. And I know that the strength of institutions of higher learning — socially, academically and intellectually — comes from their diversity and from a willingness to cross boundaries,” he said. Darnell Hunt, M.A. '91, Ph.D. '94, UCLA’s executive vice chancellor and provost, will serve as interim chancellor beginning Aug. 1.
