20 letters from this year’s incoming freshman class written during Summer Orientation, which they will re-visit upon graduation, answering the question: “What impact do I want to make on the Bruin family?”

“Coming here is a dream come true. From the very first time I stepped foot on campus as a high school sophomore, this has been where I wanted to spend my college years. This is for all the work I’ve done that has led me here and all the aspirations I have to follow.”

“I want to become one of UCLA’s notable alumni. If not, I just want to be one of their successful students who end up happy with their job and with their life.”

“As part of the Bruin family, I want to give back to the school and the programs that help the students. I want to proudly represent UCLA, maybe working for the United Nations globally.”

“I would like to show how diverse the Bruin family is in our science fields. I want to be able to showcase that being a female in a STEM field is possible and UCLA has helped me accomplish that.”

“During my time here, I would like to be proof of a young black male success. I would also like to be able to help younger African American males gain entrance into UCLA and propel them into success.”

“I want to prove to everyone and myself that I was meant to be here. That I am here for a reason. Graduating will show that more and more minorities are capable of attaining a higher education and will be great in making the world a better place. I have lots of young children looking up to me and I want them to follow into these foot steps.”

“Have a building named after me.”

“Yesterday I cried because I was so overwhelmed with the college life and classes. That gave me the motivation to get up and try again. I will have a lot of fun and be a badass: BRING IT ON!”

“I want to provide a safe environment for all the students. I want Bruins to feel like activities on campus are a way to create a bigger family. I hope that through more involvement we can finally tear down ALL harms that cause exclusion, depression, etc… and truly provide a safe environment for all.”

“I want to make a difference in other people’s lives. Bring smiles and hopes back to the people who are despairing, hurting or grieving. I want to make myself love, not just survive.”

“I want to help prepare low-income students from poor neighborhood to come to school here and let them know it’s not just a dream, it’s a reality.”

“I hope people will remember me as some great person in the medical field who left a great impact on the world and I can say that it all began at UCLA.”

“I write to you scared, excited and ready to slay. I’m not sure if I’ll graduate on time, or if I’ll make good friends, but what I’m sure of is that I’m exactly where I am supposed to be – at the world’s best college. Hopefully I’ll have met someone really nice and caring by then, and failed and cried from my first F. You can do this! I can’t wait to get out of school and start making real money. Like six figures or more. And when I come back, I can donate money to UCLA for helping me grow and make real money.”

“In the year 2020, I will have:
1. Graduated
2. Traveled globally
3. Performed in multiple events
4. Educated my community
5. Made Salinas a known city.
Made my mami y papi proud!”

“I hope when you read this note that you remember where this all started, this college experience. I hope you reflect on all you have learned – about yourself, others, classes, life, the future. I hope you don’t fear what is to come next and that you know you are ready. I hope you remember the mistakes, the challenges, the memories, the successes, the tears, the laughs and everything you have gone through. I hope you enjoyed these past four years. I know you have. Keep being yourself, keep your curiosity and love you. Best of luck in the future and YAY college!”

“All the hard work, the fear of failing, finally paid off. Now it’ll be the time to change the world out there. Help those who were there for me. Finally, I’ll be able to see my parents’ happiness through their tears and mixed emotions. It’s time to set the example for Robert, Christopher and Jesus, my little ones.”

“I want to prove that regardless of how bad your circumstances are, or where you come from, success is attainable.”

“Future me, if you are reading this, good job girl!”
