The Common Book Program gives new UCLA students an introduction to the college experience. Alumni are invited to represent the UCLA community by helping new students engage in discussions, learn about each other and share diverse perspectives in a respectful manner.

This year’s book is “Bad Feminist,” a collection of essays by Roxane Gay, a well-known writer and presence on social media. The book was selected by a committee of faculty, staff and students as a platform for engaging in critical dialogue on topics such as politics, American culture, race, gender, social media, sexual orientation and perceptions of feminism.

You are invited to:

  • Read the book
  • Attend a discussion by the author
  • Lead a discussion among students
Alumni can participate in two ways:
  1. Become an Ambassador Volunteer to co-lead a book discussion. There will be two Common Book discussions - one for commuter students on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. on campus and the other for residential students on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. in the residence halls. Ambassadors are given a free book, parking and a meal ticket. Sign Up

  2. Attend an event featuring Roxane Gay
Come see the author at Royce Hall on Monday, Sept. 21, which includes a book signing after the event. The event is free but general admission tickets are required, and can be picked up at the Central Ticket Office. Seating is first-come, first-served.
