It’s September and that means we’re getting ready to welcome the class of 2018 to campus. But at Alumni Affairs we’ve been so excited about our newest Bruin family members that we couldn’t wait until the last week of September. We’ve been welcoming them all summer long in their hometowns through our New Bruin Send-off Celebrations! New Bruin Send-off Celebrations bring together past, present and future Bruins. Alumni networks, in collaboration with the Bruin Recruitment Program at UCLA Alumni Affairs, organize parties known as Send-off Celebrations, which provide a space for incoming students and parents to meet and ask alumni and current students their questions. It’s also a great way for alumni to network with each other, welcome the new class and their families, and spread the True Bruin spirit in their region. There’s something for everyone!
Jim Higson ’74, a parent of an incoming freshman, had this to say:
“Send-offs provide a much more intimate space for entering students to get to know other students from their area before coming to the large campus of UCLA. My transition from high school to UCLA was a bit overwhelming at first because I came from a small private school with a graduating class of 150 to a campus where my first chemistry class had over 500 students.”
The adjustment for him was a bit difficult at first. He would have liked to have been able to attend an event like a Send-off Celebration to connect early on with other students.
“As a parent I’m excited to attend this Send-off to support my son and watch him make these types of connections before even setting foot on campus. And as an alumnus, I enjoyed meeting other alumni, swapping stories about our time on campus and reminiscing about some of ourr favorite professors and places in the Westside.”
What’s more, the younger Higson will be living in Hedrick Hall - the same residence hall Jim lived in as a student in the 70s.
While the Higsons had a wonderful experience, Michael Williamson, an incoming student, attended the same event and had this to say:
“The food was delicious, the games were fun and engaging and I met some pretty cool people. I just wish the Send-off Celebration would have been a lot longer!”
These celebrations have been taking place throughout the summer beginning on July 12. As the New Bruin Send-off Celebrations enters its final month, we invite all Bruins and their guests to attend as many as you can to keep the party going until students are officially ready for classes.
