A Welcome Message for Students

Happy Holidays fellow Bruins! Congratulations on successfully finishing fall quarter. With the new year around the corner, it's time to set goals for you and your mentor. Here are some tips for how you can maximize your mentorship.
  • Check in with your mentor regularly — whether via email, a phone call or a quick text — and keep them in the loop with what you are up to on campus. Be patient when waiting for a response; you and your mentor are both busy.
  • Go into each conversation with a clear idea of what you would like to accomplish.
  • Open yourself to your mentor's advice while also staying firm with your beliefs. Your mentor has a lot of experience, but this experience doesn't have to align perfectly with what you want to do in the future.
  • Be candid. Remember that your mentor was once a student too. Ensure that your communication is honest and your goals are realistic.
Coming up this winter quarter, visit our weekly office hours in the James West Alumni Center for advice and tips every Tuesday from 3 to 4 p.m.
